Ok so I saw a request for a blending tutorial on gimp_tutorial and decided to do a reaaaallly quick pipsqueak one for anyone who found it of any help...
The images I used for this are of my baby, Ernie, and his mother Stella, who have now been made famous by the wonder of Livejournaalll...
As the backgrounds to the images are really big...(it was what I had up at the time)...I've had to put links to the image examples.
Here we go!
1-Add your pictures next to each other, each on a separate layer, one has to overlap the other so as not to leave a big white patch between the images.

2-choose the image with the largest focal point and put it to top, but select the other layer as the one you will be editing. In our case it's Ernie's cute little(BIG) head

3-The easiest way to do this next bit is to zoom in to about 400 or 600. Select the lasso tool and start to cut around the focal point, actually cut into the focal point, delete it and you'll see that it won't delete the section from that image, it'll delete that same section from the other layer. Keep going until you've finished cutting out every part that obstructs the main focal point.

4-Move the bottom layer to the top layer and vice versa. now raise the opacity on the lasso tool and just sorta draw a thin oval shape around the harsh edges that seperate the backgrounds of the images. clear the areas and it won't get rid of it all immediately but don't deselect. Just keep clicking clear and it'll gradually do it where you'll not be able to see any lines that seperate the images.

5-Make any last adjustments and blend the last bits.
6-Merge the layers!

I seriously hope this is ok, I'm deffo gonna write a better one tomorrow or whenever I have time but it should do for the time being.
